Where to buy Modular Synth PCBs?
I built up a euro format dual oscillator from 2 MFOS VCO PCBs. It was a gargantuan effort in panel wiring and I made a couple of octave selectors as a daughter board on the back. I made the octave selectors on protoboard from the schematics on the …

Yeah, that fits more with my experience. Before I set the offset to center on a note, I couldn’t get it the 2 oscillators into tune.

Mutable Gear RackMount Kits
Looks like they might be a bit deep for a Doepfer lc6/9 without at least some angled cables. Pretty cool though

I don’t even know how this would apply, but I think the RoHS laws prohibit the selling of consumer electronics that contain lead. I know how much you guys love you leaded solder. As I said, it might not even be a valid concern, but something to thi…

Mounting LEDs, flush with the board or raised? What looks best
I just took delivery of the parts for a control board taken from the bom on the relevant page. The LED standoffs that are mentioned there (from farnell) are 10mm long. I am thinking this it too long! Might be a good idea to update the bom with the …

Electrolube PCB Cleaner recall
I haven’t ever bothered cleaning it off as it would have to happen after the soldering is done and that is the very time you get to power it on and start playing!

@fcd72 : I think flux can cause the PCB to degrade over time. At least thats what I was informed. Also it can lead to capacitance between pads

What are you guys using for MIDI controllers?
frequencycentral.co.uk do some DIY roland 100M clone bits and pieces. Not sure how similar the 100M circuitry is to the 100 though.

What are you guys using for MIDI controllers?
There is loads of DIY stuff available for modular as well but it is generally more in the form of folks doing short runs of PCBs. I have made a dual analogue VCO from a couple of MFOS boards but it took an absolute age as I had to drill the fron…

Thats what I thought. That is a pretty clever solution! In my experience tuning a VCO can be pretty fiddly, but you have provided a means to side step the problem.

@pichenettes So does the VCO auto calibration just sample the vco output pitch and scale the cv it sends to the exponential converter front end to maintain pitch? ie the VCO is basically not tracking 1v per octave, but the pitch (note) to cv conver…

I understand what you are saying. I am not looking for perfect tracking. I was only interested in how the 2164 performed as an exponential converter. I maintain though, that people will expect their synth to basically track well over a few octav…

Is the DCO stuff just in addition to the VCO? Presumably the current charging the integrator has to be broadly related to the frequency or you would have amplitude drift.

I hate to say it, I suspect more people would complain about bad tracking than would embrace it. I know what you mean though. It will never be as pin-point accurate as a digital solution and will probably sound better for it.

I more wondered what peoples experiences were. I guess there probably aren’t that many experiences yet though, as no-one has the boards.

Obsession with gear, something inherent to electronic music?
I dont think it is just a compensatory thing. I have resolved to myself that I enjoy building synths (and bicycles, beer etc.) and ‘playing’ with them as much if not more than seriously making music with them. It used to worry me that that was the …

My ceramic cap 100nF for Digital Control board are marked "104 K" not just "104"
Yeah, Capacitor labeling isn’t the most obvious until you know how to interpret it. it means 10 and 4 0’s so that is 100000 and it is the number of pico farrads rather than nano farads. It takes a bit of getting used to.

Yeah, it seemed a but incongruous when I read it (the other day). I had only encountered the track for the first time on these forums when Olivier posted it. Weird how life sends you these little coincidences now and again.

wikipedia kind of suggests that that is the first acid house track. Or at least proto-acid in its use of 303 and 808 and the nature of the programming

The 303 sound is pretty cool (I have a x0xb0x) but after having played around with other more flexible synths (like the shruthi), It really seems quite basic – a one trick pony if you will. I would pick up my shruthi before my x0x for most things. …
