Choosing a new laptop (no "Mac vs PC" troll please) :-S
If a Macbook overheats you’ll find it is often due to poor assembly, but then all laptops are prone to it. They slap the heatsink compound on as if it is mortar between two bricks. Any laptop is prone to poor GPU/CPU packaging. BGA chips are j…

Choosing a new laptop (no "Mac vs PC" troll please) :-S
I’ve run Linux, Windows, an Amiga and OSX for considerable time. Every system has its downsides. You really need to decide what software is 100% essential and see if the system you want to buy has it. If you have a Windows machine tuned and ded…

Shruthi-Synthesizer and my "WAVE 1"
The touchscreen is a nice idea. But I can imagine that drawing the display takes some CPU time.

The Akai would be okay if it had drum pad inputs, it could be a simple drum brain then. For £79 what would you expect though, it’s very low price.

Surface mount analog components
Analog has been “hot” since the 80s, in some music genres it never went away. Acid house was in the 80s. Rave in the 90s.

Issues with basicwayne on ebay
It’s often cheaper and easier to buy C64s and take the chips out. It seems a crime to do this, but you can always put a Swinsid back into the C64s so they still work okay.

Grounding for PCB work?
Can’t say I’ve had any problems not using one. Just don’t rub a balloon on your head before handling chips.

An optoisolator is pretty simple though? Isnt it just an LED and photodiode in a chip?

Who likes Yamaha..?
Those Yamaha XG things weren’t bad for ROMplers. They at least improved on the very basic GM standard adding filters and FX. I stuck a DB50XG board in a case (I was using my Amiga at the time) and made it a MIDI module, but had to write an editor…

To clean the board, or not?
I’ve not bothered myself, but it makes your boards look ugly if you don’t.

Now if someone could create a UI that works with the DX7 soft synth which could then output sysex for the real thing then that would be cool. The FS1R can load DX7 patches too.

I have one, un-cased and another board still waiting to be finished. But I’ve taken a break from all the building of stuff for a while.

I like the FM sound, but like any synthesis method it has things it does well and things it doesn’t do well. Due to the lack of understanding of it people just never programmed it and so most people have only heard the presets. I lent/gave a f…

Yep, the Preen interface is good. But you have to remember that Yamaha’s FM implementation is phase modulation, but the Preen is using the original FM process.

SDHC card for Ambika?
I think you can get a SDSC device to accept SDHC cards if you know what to look for (code change). I just bought a cheap 2GB Sandisc and it works fine.

It’s not the UI you don’t understand it is the way it works. A fully knobbed UI wouldn’t make sense on FM since there a different models like flow charts. So it’s not easy to translate into a knob based interface. The way I think of FM is to th…

I didn’t find the Ambika difficult. The main board is very well spaced out and so easy to build. The voicecards make it easy to split the job up into smaller chunks.

Well, there’s the DSI Tetra and so on, but they’re not as powerful generally. But they are a little cheaper.

When you look at the line up it seems they don’t know what a synth is any more. Just sample playback units all based around MOTIF. http://uk.yamaha.com/en/products/music-production/synthesizers/

There’s nothing magical about these chips. The chip is just a way to save space. If anything you have more possibilities for altering the sound to your tastes when not using an IC.
