Hi, I just received my midipal yesterday and have been reading through the manual before I case it up and get to work.

One thing that seems to be missing on the midipal sequencer that was a great feature of the 101 (and jx3p) was to step through the sequence with triggers.
It’s a great way to get quick sequences for live playing.
I wonder if it would be possible to make a mode on the sequencer to step to the next note in the sequence every time a midi note is received rather than a constant clock.
Any ideas how this could be implemented?

Split the keyboard on my A90, out 1 to one Shruthi for bass, out 2 to the MIDIpal, then to three more Shruthis and out 3 to the PreenFM. Lots of possibilities, it’s like having a modular sort of. Works very much like polychaining but adjusting an upstream Shruthi does not affect downstream Shruthis. The MIDI patchbay was certainly one of the best investments I’ve made so far I think. Doesn’t make any sound but it sure makes using a stack of keyboards alot easier.

I have an old Mattel Synsonics drum machine which is really fun for improvising beats. Basically it has 4 sounds, each sound has a button to trigger 1/4 notes, 1/8 notes, and 1/16 notes. See it in action here (fast forward to 1 min): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F323QheU91A
There’s no way to sync to midi clock though, so its pretty difficult to integrate it with modern gear.
I was thinking it would be awesome to have a midipal app that could control a drum module in a similar way to the Synsonics (and also maybe include an option to latch parts and play triplets?)
I realize the midipal already has a drum app, but this would be a bit different.

I see with the MidiPal Monitor App that other commands are sent from each switch beside the one I programmed them for.
I see that in the FCB manual some things are not clear (in the UnO manual either) and in some parts of the setup menu I have leds activated for switches whose function is not explained in the manuals, but I tried to change them and nothing changes about this “bug”.
Also I did not find how to reset the pedal (bought used).

I would love to be able to take the linear mapping in the Alesis and remap it into what I want, and not let Alesis, or any other keyboard in my collection, dictate that velocity curve for me.

Hello everyone!

I have been playing and touring regularly for a while using my trusted companion, a beat-up, old Alpha Juno-1.

Recently though, I’ve been looking at moving on up to a Mopho X4 for a slightly broader range of sounds and more hands-on control from a similarly sized synth.

However, only one thing has kept me from pulling the trigger – the lack of chord memory!

Chord memory is vital to the sound of my act, which is a kind of blend between a live band and 90’s house music. In our set, chord memory is active about half the time, so its absence on the Mopho X4 is absolutely a deal-breaker, which is a shame, because the synth fits the bill for what I need in every other aspect.

Just now I stubled upon the MIDIpal, and it seems to be the perfect solution for getting what I need out of the Mopho.

Only, I wonder, how live-friendly is it, and how is its implementation in comparison with the Alpha Juno’s chordmem?

I’ve read the MIDIpal manual, but it doesn’t really answer the questions I have:

Quoting the manual’s entire entry on chordmem:

“This app memorizes a chord and lets you play transpositions of it. To record a chord, click the encoder, and play a chord. Click the encoder again and that’s it maestro!”

1) Do I have to record the chord every time I want to enable chordmem? I frequently have to enable and disable it in my set, even within a very short time in the same song, and it would be a major inconvenience if I had to enter the chord again each time.

2) Also, seeing as the Alpha-Juno’s chord memory is integral to the synth’s architecture and voice allocation (entering a two-note chord only uses two of the synth’s voices, so if you have a long release and press a new note, the previous chord is cut off and a new one is played, killing the previous notes), I guess I would have to always enter 4-note chords (Mopho has 4 voices) to achieve the same voice-stealing effect?

3) Are there any members here who are familiar with the Alpha Juno and MIDIpal who could comment on any other differences in chordmem application between the two units, which I might be missing?

Thanks!

I’m sitting here for the whole evening testing my MidiPal with NI Komplete:

Blasting sequence lines using FM8 and the MidiPal sequencer

Fantastic and slowly evolving soundscapes with Absynth and the MidiPal arpeggiator (using very slow settings)

Very cool drum performances with Battery and the MidPal drummachine app

This is so cool and fun. I think i need a second MidiPal! :-)
Will see, maybe i will be able to combine the sequencer and the drum app into one. Together with a Virus TI in multimode I could then perform whole songs using the TI arp and the MidiPal Drum&Seq app.
Thanks to the well organized and written code I think this should be possible.

Olivier has really done some great and extensive work developing all the code for the MidiPal! You immediately recognize that he has spend a lot of time on thinking about functionality and user interface for every of the apps. They have been developed from a musicians view and less from a technical one which makes them all fantastic to be used.

This may have been asked prior but maybe not.

What is the default value for the Groove settings; is 0 basically zero regardless of the mode it’s in, or is something like 63 zero? I suppose that the modes which are dragging or pushing are perhaps in a given direction from zero?

A better question is, once you push or retract from a standard beat then adjust in a possibly different direction are you then ‘off’ from where you started or is MidiPal always keeping straight clock internally then adjusting the pulses that are sent out?

I’m having difficulty trying to sync two devices to the MidiPal clock; one is Maschine (1.7) and the other is an STG sequencer which takes Sync24 from a Doepfer MSY2. It’s off by a slight bit and even with a basic beat kicking a bass drum on 2 and 4, I can’t find a happy middle that hits both dead on. There is no drift as far as I can tell so it isn’t like the beat on 2 starts out close and moves or starts out dead on and moves, but the distance between counts seems to be off and not dead on so it’s almost like there is lag between the early part of a given measure and the end of a measure but it’s dead on at the beginning of the next.

Could be the Doepfer Midi to Sync24 converter, could be machine or just general midi latency.

For more information, MidiPal is plugged directly into a MOTU Timepiece AV with a short DIN cable, then clock is sent to Maschine which, if you are not aware is only an app running on a Mac Pro 8 core w/4GB of memory, then another din cable comes out of another port on Timepiece and into the Doepfer Sync24 box, then a cable connects to the STG Timebuffer which provides an ‘internal’ form of clock to all of the modules. In this case, I’m driving a trigger store which is sending analog gates to Bananaeurism’s 808 Bass drum which I built using his board and a few dozen parts.

Final question is, I see a “more accurate” clock in the doc but mine only has the single clock app. Is there an update with something that is ‘more accurate’. And is it really more accurate or just capable of better precision (tenths of a BPM)?

Thanks.

Could a delay parameter be added to the LFO? So you can set say 32/96ths before LFO is output etc. Even better if it could be set independant for each.

Would it be fun to have a chance parameter for the delay/strum? I think it would be a great way of adding some interest to sequenced basslines etc.

Hi –

I was wondering if I run one MIDIpal (Scale and harmony processor) into another (MIDIpal Dispatcher – cyclic)
and the sequence going through was monophonic with no overlapping notes,
would the MIDIpal send the 3 notes (incoming-tuned, harmony, and random) to the same synths every time?

Or maybe the question is: what order are the notes placed in the MIDI stream?

14-bit pitch bend and MidiPal monitor display

Hoping somebody can help me with a Midi issue I have with a synth. I’m pretty hand and have a decent understanding of Midi but this baffles me.

I am sending pitch bend from a Novation SL MK II controller to a Moog Little Phatty and I’m hearing the dreaded ‘zipper’ effect when I have the bend range set to a large (12 half-step) interval. Both the Novation, and the Phatty supposedly support 14 bit midi for pitch bend and I’ve confirmed the latter with the developer of the Phatty code:

What I see from MidiPal:

I do see changing 14 bit values (wheel all the way down shows 0x0000, all the way up shows 0x3fff.

But if I bend up from the center (0x2000), I see the following as coming from the Novation:

2080
20f0
2180
21f0 etc.

So it’s jumping 128 decimal at a time and the full range (16384 div 128 = well… 128 aka 7-bit midi)

Somebody please correct my math or help me. Thanks.

Proposal: new MIDIpal app

I have coded a fun MIDIpal app and I’d like to have your opinion about it. In terms of size/memory, it would be a good replacement for the “ear training game” app which is, to my opinion, less useful.

What it does is generate a slow arpeggio/sequence imitating classic indian tampura (tambura, tanpura, whatever) pattern.

The settings are the following:

run: starts/stops the sequence.

clk: internal or external clock.

bpm: tempo.

div: note duration (1/4 for normal operation).

chn: output channel.

sa: root note (can be set from the keyboard).

mod: pattern, among pa (Pa sa sa Sa), ma (Ma sa sa Sa), ni (Ni sa sa Sa), sa (sa sa Sa).

cyc: pattern cycling (0 = starts at Sa ; 5 starts at Pa / Ma / Ni / -).

I have attached the firmware file…

It would be cool to be able to load a sysex dump so you can tweak changes if your rules arent working as well as you like in the real world. Right now I am taking screenshots of each version so I can manually re-enter the data if I want to add rules/make changes.

poly mode voice allocation

Hi, I.m no MIDIpal user (yet) but I think it could be the thing I’m looking for.
Is it possible to program the voice allocation based on notenumber? This is what I want to achieve: when I play a single note it sends on (for example) 3 midi channels, but when I play a chord the voices get divided by high/low note priority.I want the highest note of a chord always send to the same channel, the second highest to the next the lowest to the next, etc.

This is a great way to emulate brass or string sections, the Roland ARX-03 brass board is the only device I know that does this so I know it is technicaly possible….

Thnx in advance, greetings, Paul

Midipal clock source with higher resolution

Hey, I just bought a Midipal and discovered that the clock can only be set in intervals of 1 bpm. This is a dealbreaker for me because in a live situation I want to be able to do smooth tempo changes, and I consider 1 bpm not smooth. I can program and I can download a toolchain, but it seems that changing the Midipal clock to have a higher accuracy could be a bit problematic since a lot of type definitions will have to be changed etc.

Can you give me any pointers on how to proceed here? I see that I will have to change the files clock and clock_source, but I would be glad if you could give me a quick introduction into the code.

Many thanks, Ander.
